Our Activities
Most people with spinal cord injuries(SCI) want to work yet need support, training and vocational rehabilitation services to help them obtain and keep a job. These sources of support may help to overcome many barriers that are outside the individual’s control, such as financial and health care issues, accessibility, and employer attitudes. There are consistent findings in research that people who are employed after SCI live longer and report higher satisfaction with life and better health than people who are not working.
HOME VISITS
KARUNYA BHAVAN team is associated with 1200 SCI(Spinal Cord Injured) living in different parts of Kerala. The team visits SCI patients and their family regularly. The first stage of service begins with peer group counseling and motivation and followed by vocational counseling and rehabilitation. The envisaged project proposal avails to 120 SCI patients and their asset less poor family is assured rehabilitation and sustainable income generation.
KARUNYA SOFT SKILL TRAINING UNITS
KARUNYA BHAVAN Introduces a number of soft skill production units for rehabilitated spinal cord injured patients and it includes Paper bag and Pen making units, umbrella making unit, candle making unit, washing powder, soap and hand wash lotion making units etc.
MANUFACTURING OF TOILET CUSHION COVERS
Mr.K.Mohan Nair(Chairman,Karunya Bhavan) who himself is a spinal cord injured person, Specially designed toilet cushion covers and three-wheeler vehicles seats for Spinal cord Injured person’s use. These are the unique products of KARUNYA BHAVAN and highly demanded among SCI patients in Kerala.
ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION ACTIVITIES
KARUNYA BHAVAN promotes environmental protection activities like Agriculture, Social forestry, medicinal plantation, bio-fertility promotions, animal husbandry and vegetable gardens etc. KARUNYA BHAVAN rented 8 acres of land for the purpose of promoting its environmental protection activities and agriculture.
REHABILITATION OF THE SCI PATIENTS
KARUNYA BHAVAN is a rehabilitation Centre for the disabled, mostly for SCI(Spinal Cord Injured) patients. Presently there are 13 SCI patients under this non profitable NGO’s care. The organization is licensed by the Orphanage Control Board, Kerala under the Social Justice Department.
LIVE PROJECTS UNDER KARUNYA BHAVAN
Conduct workshops on initial handling and transportation of patients having spinal cord injury.The present year a number of programs are conducted on current subjects. Schools, Colleges and Clubs are interested in having our program. Still the financial shortages result in personnel's remuneration problems. - Secondly, selected 50 SCI patients and their family under poor economic background are provided with a life emergency Kit(daily using items) in regular base. - Finally, the team encourages and supports SCI affected persons to use three-wheelers,four wheelers with modified fetchers and promote driving. We design the seat in the most comfortable way the SCI affected person can use.
